Taa Moko - Maori Tattoo design
Traditionally Taa Moko were carved into the skin and not punctured. A sharp edged chisel would be used to form deep cuts into the skin, then another chisel would be dipped into sooty type pigment and tapped in to the skin. This method left the skin with grooves instead of a smooth surface.
Patterns used for Taa Moko depicted certain elements of the world and were placed on particular parts of the body to tell a story/history of the wearer. Today a tattoo machine is used to carry on this way of story telling, providing another form of identity.
Our Taa Moko artist
Located within our village is Maori Taa Moko artist Jason Phillips who can create for you a personalized design based on information shared about yourself to take home or tattooed on to the skin.
