Taa Moko - Maori Tattoo Design
Traditionally Taa Moko were carved into the skin and not punctured. A serrated or sharp edged chisel would be used to form deep cuts into the skin, then another chisel would be dipped into sootey type pigment and tapped in to the skin. This method left the skin with grooves instead of a smooth surface.
Patterns used for Taa Moko depicted certain elements of the world and were placed on particullar parts of the body to tell a story/history of the wearer. Today a tattoing machine is used to carry on this way of story telling, providing another form of identity.
