Itinerary

DAY ONE

  • 4.00pm - Welcoming
    Arrive at Whakarewarewa and meet your Guide. Participate in the whakatau (welcome).  Opportunity to perform our traditional Maori greeting (hongi). and receive an explanation on the Whakatau process
  • 4.15pm - TAHI – Protecting Our Land (Guided Tour) 
    Learn why this area is so important and see how the local people still utilise the hot pools & steam for daily living. Learn about the native plants that grow within the village and how the Rotorua city utilised our natural resources. See a corn being cooked in the natural hot spring and enjoy your egg whilst sitting on our thermally heated floor.
  • 5.15pmRUA – Perpetuating Our Customs (Marae Protocols)
    Here you will learn about the importance of the Marae and the customs & protocols we follow.  The roles of men, women & children. 
  • 5.45pm -  Free time to relax and freshen up.
  • 6.00pm  DINNER
     Your dinner has been cooked within the natural hot steam & pools. Assist with clearing away your tables and dishes. See menu below
  • 7.00pmTORU – Promoting Our Arts (Performance) 
    Enjoy members from our tribe perform local songs and dance. Opportunity to take photos and ask group members questions. Learn about performing arts and how it has evolved over time. Girls will learn about poi and boys will learn about the Haka. An opportunity to perform to each other
  • 8.00pm - WHA –  Story Telling & Reflection
    Learn about local legends.  Opportunity to ask Hosts questions.
  • 9.00pm  Prepare for bed. Free time to relax or shower.
  • 9.30  Lights out

DAY TWO

  • 6.45am  -  Wake up
    Tidy up Marae. An opportunity to apply what you learnt in Activity Rua. Shower and pack bags
  • 7.30am  -  Breakfast
    Assist with clearing away your tables and dishes.
  • 8.30am  -  RIMA- Perpetuating Our Crafts (Weaving) 
    Here you will learn about the importance of weaving.  Opportunity to create your own treasure out of flax as well as ask our local expert questions.
  • 9.00am  -   Farewell 
    Be farewelled by Host and depart Whakarewarewa

NB:  This is a sample itinerary only.  Overnight village stays are tailored to suit pending on numbers, learning outcomes, food requirements, time of year and arrival times .


Dinner

  • Hangi Main: Chicken, silver side, bread stuffing, carrots, cabbage, potato and sweet potato (kumara) with gravy sauce. 
  • Dessert:  Famous Whakarewarewa team pudding with fruit salad, custard and cream.
  • Refreshments: Tea, coffee, milo (hot chocolate), water & juice

Breakfast

  • Continental: Porridge, corn flakes, fruit, toast and spreads 
  • Cooked: Scrambled eggs, baked beans, sausages and toast.]
  • Refreshments: Tea, coffee, milo (hot chocolate) and juice

Special Conditions

Payment Policy

Full payment is required at least 14 days prior to visit.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation notice received 30 days from the confirmed date, 85% refund
14 days prior to confirmed date, 50% refund 7 days prior to confirmed date, 25% refund
Within 7 days, no refund.

Safety Policy

Visitors should not wander off the walking paths due to the intense geothermal environment. This is to ensure the safety of our visitors.

Overnight Emergencies

The Host will stay overnight and will have access to a phone & vehicle for medical emergencies.

Whanau (Family) Bereavements

Funerals take precedence over any confirmed bookings.  Should a funeral occur at the time of your confirmed date, you will be notified straight away. If group is under 20 pax sleeping will occur within one of the village homes. If group is 21 pax or more, sleeping and breakfast will be taken to another marae we connect to.

What Is Supplied

Mattress, linen, duvet, towel, overnight host, all meals. 

What To Bring

A change of clothes, sleep ware and toiletries.  If wet or cold bring a warm jacket and raincoat.  Also bring a camera.  Good walking shoes.
