The Whakarewarewa Guided Tour

Our friendly, local guides are the direct descendants of early Māori guides who have shaped tourism in New Zealand for generations. Join them as they guide you through our Living Māori Village. On your tour, you will:
  • Experience an authentic Living Māori Village where people live on a daily basis using the natural geothermal resources to cook, bathe and heat their homes on a daily basis.
  • Learn about vibrant Māori Culture and traditions of the Tuhourangi / Ngati Wahiao people.
  • View the geothermal wonders of Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley up close and personal, including the world famous Pohutu geyser, boiling mud-pools, steam vents and bubbling pools.
  • Enjoy a cooking demonstration and watch our residents prepare Hangi meals in our in-ground steam boxes and cook corn in the bubbling water of our geothermal hot pools.
  • Develop an understanding of the history of the area as you learn what it is like to live in the challenging environment of Whakarewarewa Valley where daily life includes cooking in the bubbling pools and steam vents, and bathing in the refreshing therapeutic waters.
  • Take in the various historical landmarks and buildings, including an active Marae, our WWII Memorial Archway, two historic churches, and tapu (sacred) burial grounds.
Tours are hourly from 9.00am to 4.00pm. Tickets may be purchased online and picked up on site.

Also Included in your Entry:

  • Attend one of our Māori Cultural Performances daily at 11.15am & 2.00pm by one of Rotorua’s leading Kapa Haka Groups. Hear traditional song and dance, and experience the fearsome Haka, performed by NZ Sporting teams.
  • Access our self-guided geothermal nature trails, where you can explore the natural bush, manuka scrub and eerie geothermal landscape. Walks range between 10 and 50 minutes.
